National Blueberry Muffin Day is gaining momentum. Did you know that the Blueberry Muffin was the official muffin of the state of Minnesota?

Now the entire family -- including pet -- can enjoy blueberry muffins. This product includes whole dried blueberries and fiber and even looks like a real muffin! .

What a great combination -- blueberries, flaxseed, quinoa, tef and chia! Look for more and more of these "super muffin" combinations.

We are seeing more and more non-traditional uses of blueberry muffin flavor and identification on non-baking products. This includes blueberry muffin yogurt (above) from Europe, blueberry milk in England and dozens of other innovations.
Celebrate the Muffin
July is National Blueberry Month in the USA! Did you know that July 11 is National Blueberry Muffin Day? No one is quite sure of the origin of the blueberry muffin, but some say it was a European custom brought to the Americas. Others say it was created regionally in New England. Regardless of origin -- it is time to celebrate.

Here is the winner of the 2016 Little Blue Dynamo Award for innovation! Judges like the integration of optimal amounts of blueberries including frozen, dried and powders!
Add your own blueberries -- what a great idea! We still see a few products each year with a lot of blueberry on the pack and none inside. At least this one clearly informs the consumer and helps promote blueberries.

Blueberry Muffin Products Rise
Here is a chart (above) from MINTEL which shows new products which are identified as "blueberry muffins." Very interesting that the most activity has been in Asia and the Pacific. Muffins are a great way to integrate frozen blueberries into a shelf stable product that can be marketed in convenience stores for consumers on the go!
"Gluten free" is a big deal in the baking industry. More and more companies are formulating blueberries into popular items like muffins to add moisture and improve texture.
Ok, you are probably wondering -- what is going on down under. Australians just love muffins for breakfast and dozens of companies are packing optimal levels of blueberries (50 percent of weight) into commercial muffins. Small bakeries are also getting into the act!
Here is a muffin package from a simpler time in the 1930s. Note that the blueberries are canned and are made to show blueberry in the finished product!
